Back packer tax return

Julie asked me this question the other day "I worked for some of this year on a working visa from the UK. I intend to leave in April, 12 months after I arrived. Can i do my tax and get all my tax back?"

Back Packer tax returns

If you came to Australia and worked with the intention of going back home after your holiday, then the tax office will tax you at a flat rate of 30%.

If you came on a working visa, then decided to stay and have made plans to do so, you may be considered a resident for tax purposes. You must be here for at least 6 months in a financial year to prove this basically. Remember, this applies to the situation you're in when we lodge your tax return.

To see the difference it makes, look at this example.

(Backpacker) total earning before tax = $15000 x 30%  = $4500, If you have paid more than this you get that back.
(Resident for tax) total earning before tax = ($15000 - 6000) x 15%  = $1350, If you have paid more than this you get that back.

Lodging the form before 30 June means you have to submit a special form advising you are leaving and the dates. The processing can take several months.

We can lodge your return on 1 July (the first day they can be lodged each year). We can have any refund sent to a bank account of your choice. Even o/s.

We have found this gets you the maximum refund possible. Contact our office and we can explain better to your circumstances.
